Today I talk to Philip and Truett from the Austin, Texas band BRISCOE. We talk about their recent show where they got to open for The Dave Matthews Band, the making of the new album WEST OF IT ALL, a couple of the songs off the new album and more!
ABOUT BRISCOE:
Briscoe is Truett Heintzelman and Philip Lupton. To record West of It All, the duo was joined by producer Brad Cook on bass, drummer Matt McCaughan (Bon Iver), and multi-instrumentalist Phil Cook (Megafaun, Hiss Golden Messenger). Signed by ATO Records while undergrads, the Texan duo wrote West of It All as graduation loomed in the distance, funneling the stories of their college experience — from heartbreak to hard-won lessons to weekend trips into the rural countryside — into a raw, rugged blend of classic and contemporary influences. The result is a collection of 10 songs with folksy hooks and bold songwriting that bridges the gap between classic American roots music and its modern-day incarnation.
Formed at University of Texas at Austin, Briscoe quickly went from college gigs to selling out Antone’s and the Continental Club Gallery. As Briscoe continued to perform and grow their fanbase, a wider audience began to take notice. They soon opened shows for Noah Kahan and Ruston Kelly and were selected for dates with Zach Bryan and Caamp. After recently graduating from UT, Briscoe has had a packed touring summer filled with festivals alongside some of music’s biggest names — Bonnaroo, Winnetka Music Festival, FairWell Festival, Catbird Music Festival, and Iron Blossom Music Festival are a few. The band is currently headlining a tour this fall to support West of It All.

Today we talk to Paul Wexler about his Legendary Father: Jerry Wexler, Paul's work with Van Morrison and the Go Gos, his association with Stone Temple Pilots, we talk about Led Zeppelin (a band his father helped discover) and of course Paul's own band WexWax and their debut album "Swept Away"!
Rob met Paul many years ago when he walked into his print shop in Clinton, New Jersey (to get sheet music copied) .. they've recently re-connected through facebook. It was such a pleasure to talk to Paul again and hearing how passionate he is about songwriting and playing music.
ABOUT PAUL:
Paul Wexler has spent much of his adult life producing music. Paul has produced and worked in the studio with such artists as The Grateful Dead, Van Morrison, James Brown, The B52s, Grace Jones, The GoGos, Tin Huey, The Fleshtones, The Weirdos, The Mutants and others.
The son of legendary producer/A&R/Record Man Jerry Wexler, Paul’s early immersion in the roots and branches of R&B, Country, Jazz and Rock’n’Roll was a gift from his father that keeps giving and is reflected in Wexwax’s diverse sound.
For the past 8 years, Wexwax has been performing in NYC. Although Paul is now living in the Bay Area, he frequently returns to NYC to gig.
After years of honing their sound, Wexwax has now recorded Swept Away, their debut album. Recorded at 25th Street Studios in Oakland with master engineer Gabriel Shepard helming the board (Taj Mahal, The Kronos Quartet) Swept Away is an ambitious work that fully embraces the band’s multifaceted live shows.

A Tribute to SINEAD OCONNOR - Special Edition Podcast
We (Rob & Matt) recorded a special podcast today where we talk about Sinead O'Connor who passed away on July 26, 2023 in Herne Hill London UK.
Sinead struggled throughout life despite being an incredible singer songwriter and finding fame (which most times doesn't matter at all).
We all hoped Sinead would win against her demons but in the end they won. We were looking forward to her touring again and a new album.
We were big fans of Sinead O'Connor's music from the start back in 1987 and followed her throughout her career and life. We share our memories of Sinead throughout the years and we will tell you what our top 5 Sinead O'Connor songs are.
Thank you for listening!

Today on KNOW GOOD MUSIC we talk with singer/songwriter : JESSE DANIEL EDWARDS
We talk to Jesse while he is relaxing poolside about his new incredible album "VIOLENSIA", growing up in a small California town milking goats, his time as tour manager with Morrissey and some details on one of his new songs "What Ever Happened To"
Jesse's voice is mesmerizing. Think Morrissey meets Freddie Mercury meets Jeff Buckley!
********
A little bit about JESSE DANIEL EDWARDS :
Jesse Daniel Edwards is an alternative songwriter from the small mountain town of Cuyamaca, CA where he grew up without TV, internet, or significant exposure to the outside world. Leaving home at 16, he spent his late teens busking on street corners around the US and abroad.
While singing outside of bars on Music Row in Nashville, TN, Jesse struck up a friendship with the late Al Bunetta (John Prine). Bunetta served as a mentor to the young artist, encouraging Jesse to write and tour full-time in the years to follow.
After a sabbatical from touring, Jesse returned to the stage in 2021 with critically acclaimed Juni Ata - a collaborative project produced by Steve Cropper (Otis Redding, RCA), and arranger/co-producer Jacob Rosswog. The resulting album "Saudade" charted successfully in the U.S. and abroad, while receiving significant airplay and garnering reviews in Mojo Magazine, American Songwriter, and the Associated Press.
2023 marks the vinyl re-release of 2012's "American Dreaming" (Cavity Search Records- Elliott Smith), and the summer release of piano rock opus "Violensia" (produced by Joe Chiccarelli- The Strokes, The Shins).

MELANIE Interview - Woodstock / Brand New Key / Miley Cyrus
Saturday Jul 08, 2023
Saturday Jul 08, 2023
Rob and Matt talk with legendary singer / songwriter MELANIE!
We talk to Melanie about her experience at the original woodstock as one of only 3 solo performers. Melanie goes into great detail about her experience; Starting with the moment she first heard of woodstock, flying for the first time in a helicopter and taking the stage in front of a massive audience (unlike anything she ever experienced).
We also talk about:
Her #1 song (in 1970) BRAND NEW KEY and how she came up with the idea for the song (you won't believe what it was).
Performing with Miley Cyrus (Backyard Sessions)
Melanie's new album MAGIC BUS. This is a radio interview and music from 1972.
We loved talking to Melanie and reliving many memories with her and you'll love this interview.
***********
A little bit about Melanie:
Melanie landed in the New York City music and radio scene in the late 1960’s. Her first single Beautiful People immediately became a turntable hit. Her first tour began with an impressive 40-day run of shows at Paris’ world-famous L’Olympia Theater at the personal invitation of Bruno Coquatrix. In the years to come she would entertain millions: at An Aquarian Exposition (the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival), at Carnegie Hall, and the Isle of Wight and Glastonbury music festivals, The Sydney Opera House, the South Korean DMZ, the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, the Royal Albert Hall, and other theaters, halls and beloved music clubs around the globe. Melanie launched Neighborhood Records, making her the first American woman to open a mainstream record label. She recorded over 20 chart hits and many have been re-recorded. Melanie received an Emmy after composing lyrics for the theme song of the hit television series Beauty and the Beast. “What Have They Done to My Song Ma” was re-recorded by Ray Charles with the Count Basie Band. Nina Simone delivered a remarkable rendition, as well. “(Lay Down) Candles in the Rain” was re-recorded by Mott the Hoople on their 1971 album Wildlife. Meredith Brooks and Queen Latifah later re-recorded the anthem. “Some Say (I Got Devil)" was re-recorded by Smith’s frontman Morrissey. Melanie has always known her calling in life was to entertain. Audiences have welcomed her to the stage for more than fifty years, and she continues to perform today.
