MARSHALL CRENSHAW Interview / Beatlemania / The Smithereens / La Bamba / Buddy Holly
Saturday May 14, 2022
Saturday May 14, 2022
Jim and Mike talk to Marshall about being in BEATLEMANIA, the movie LA BAMBA (he played Buddy Holly), his new re-release #447, THE SMITHEREENS and alot more
A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MARSHALL:
After getting an early break playing John Lennon in a touring company of the Broadway
musical Beatlemania, Crenshaw began his recording career with the now-legendary indie
single “Something’s Gonna Happen.” His growing notoriety in his adopted hometown of
New York City helped to win Crenshaw a deal with Warner Bros. Records, which released
his self-titled 1982 debut album. That collection established Crenshaw as one of the era’s
preeminent rock ’ n’ rollers, and that was confirmed by such subsequent albums as Field
Day, Downtown, Mary Jean & 9 Others, Good Evening, Life’s Too Short, Miracle of
Science, #447, What’s in the Bag? and Jaggedland.
Along the way, Crenshaw’s compositions have been covered by a broad array of
performers, including Bette Midler, Kelly Willis, Robert Gordon, Ronnie Spector, Marti
Jones and the Gin Blossoms, with whom Crenshaw co-wrote the Top 10 single “Til I Hear
It From You.” He’s also provided music for several film soundtracks, appeared in the films
La Bamba (in which he portrayed Buddy Holly) and Peggy Sue Got Married, and was
nominated for Grammy and a Golden Globe awards for writing the title track for the film
comedy Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.
Since 2011, Crenshaw has hosted his own radio show, The Bottomless Pit, on New York’s WFUV. He’s also worked on Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger’s HBO series Vinyl, doing “some session work, a little bit of songwriting..”

HOLLY HUTCHISON Interview - AnR Girl (Skid Row / Alanis Morissette / Blink 182 / Muse)
Wednesday Mar 16, 2022
Wednesday Mar 16, 2022
Jim and Mike talk to Holly Hutchison about being an early champion for such artists as Blink 182, Alanis Morissette, Muse and many others.
We talk about her career as an A&R person and her work with promoting and guiding new artists with her own company "AnR Girl". Believe it or not Mike, Jim and Holly all graduated from the same High School!
ABOUT HOLLY:
Holly Hutchison Weinman is a business executive with over 34 years experience in the music and entertainment industry. She is a visionary with a passion for new ideas, branding and cultivating identity.
Her professional experience, A Level Repertoire, and deal making abilities draw largely from major recording corporation environments and highly successful mentors in New York City (Atlantic Records – a Time Warner Company) and Los Angeles (Capitol Records/EMI) where she held top ranking executive positions before venturing out on her own as a well respected, detail oriented and creative business owner. As an independent she has closed deals with Jason Flom Lava/Republic, Doug Morris former CEO Sony Music Entertainment and more.
Holly built her credibility through a consistent track record of identifying artists who have proven to be successful – some being Skid Row, Deftones, Alanis Morissette, Blink 182, Slipknot, Muse, Saliva, Bosson and Vega 4.
In Fall 2016, Holly took on management of the multi-platinum hard rock group SALIVA. She has enjoyed a long standing friendship with the group after being a first champion of SALIVA in 1998 while she was an A&R Executive at Capitol Records and the band were looking for a major label home. Unfortunately, Capitol Records did not sign SALIVA but the rockers went on to have a successful career at Island Records under music experts Rob Stevenson, Jeff Fenster and Lyor Cohen. Holly would remain a friend, business ally and mentor over the course of the next 18 years. In the two years of management, she doubled the group’s gross income, released an independent single that has accumulated over 14 million streams through her marketing and landed Saliva a deal with Megaforce/Orchard/Sony Music Entertainment.
The recording studio is a second home to Holly. She has extensive A&R experience that covers all aspects of album production and song selection for pop, rock and rap genres. She has worked with top multi platinum and Grammy award winning producers, mixers and songwriters such as Timbaland, Bob Marlette (Shinedown, Red Sun Rising), Jimmy Douglas, Peter Mokran, Ron Aniello, Josh Abraham, Al Sutton (Greta Van Fleet, Kid Rock), Michael Brauer (Coldplay), Dave Way (Christina Aguilera), Diane Warren, Billy Steinberg, Monty Powell (Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts), Jack Kugell, Kirsti Manna (“Austin” Blake Shelton) and Steve Kipner, just to name a few.

Terry Manning may not be a household name but he's had an incredible journey that started at the age of 13 when he sat in with Bobby Fuller at a Junior High Dance.
From there he went to work at the legendary STAX RECORDS when he was just 15 years old!
We couldn't possibly cover everything so some things we talk about in this hour and a half interview are : Bobby Fuller, Stevie Nicks, Stax Records, Jimmy Page, Led Zeppelin III, NME magazine, Martin Luther King Jr., Chris Blackwell (founder of island records), Photography and more!
It's an interview you have to hear to believe Terry's incredible stories. A man who seemed to be at the right place at the right time and more than once.
ABOUT TERRY:
Terry Manning is a music producer, songwriter, photographer, recording engineer and artist known for work in rock, rhythm and blues, and pop music genres.
Manning began in the music industry in El Paso, Texas, where he played guitar and sang with several local bands, notably The Wild Ones, and on a couple of occasions sat in with his friend Bobby Fuller. Upon leaving El Paso, he moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where he worked for years at both Stax Records and Ardent Studios as an engineer and producer, recording and mixing such artists as Isaac Hayes, Ike & Tina Turner, Booker T. & The MG’s, Eddie Floyd, Al Green, Rufus Thomas, Sam & Dave, Billy Eckstine, Otis Redding, The Boxtops, Percy Sledge, The Staple Singers, Johnnie Taylor, Leon Russell, Ronnie Milsap, and many others. Manning was a principal part of Stax owner Al Bell’s production team for The Staple Singers, responsible for such hit records as “Respect Yourself,” “I’ll Take You There,” and "Heavy Makes You Happy.”
In 1970, Manning licensed release of his own solo album, Home Sweet Home, on Stax's Enterprise label (re-released with extra tracks by Sunbeam in 2006, and in original configuration on Four Men With Beards vinyl label in 2012).
Later working as an independent, Manning produced or engineered recordings by Joe Cocker, Wattstax, Alex Chilton, Big Star, James Taylor, Leon Russell, Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top, Jason & The Scorchers, Rhino Bucket, George Thorogood and The Destroyers, Joe Walsh, Johnny Winter, The Rainmakers, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Molly Hatchet, The Angels, Johnny Diesel and The Injectors, Lenny Kravitz, Jimmy Buffett, Shakira, Crash Test Dummies, Shania Twain, Bryan Adams, Widespread Panic, and many others.
In the mid 1980s Manning moved to London, and worked for a year out of Abbey Road Studios.
As a photographer, Manning began with black and white in the mid-1960s, capturing street scenes and topics of his interest. He has continued his photography to this day. Adding color photography to his repertoire in the1970s, Manning amassed a large collection of private works over the following years. With the beginning of Gallery and Museum presentations in 2015, Manning’s photography is now being presented in Exhibitions across the US, as well as world locations. Musically, he also photographed Chuck Berry, Terry Reid, Steppenwolf, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Dusty Springfield, Procol Harum and many other musical artists of the rock period as both an independent and as a writer/photographer for New Musical Express. Manning was one of the last to photograph his acquaintance, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on the day before the tragic assassination.
1991 saw him founding Lucas Engineering, a boutique audio company which makes professional audio recording gear; this company expanded in 2008, adding microphones to their arsenal of products. Lucas Microphones, under Manning’s guidance, have since become amongst the top high end recording devices in the audio world.
In 1992, Chris Blackwell of Island Records fame sought out Manning as a partner to revitalize Blackwell's famous Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas, which Manning operated successfully for over 20 years.
Manning’s newest music as an artist are the 2021 single "What's the Use", the ECR Music Group/Lucky Seven Records releases of Manning’s newest (2019) live album “Playin’ In Elvis’ House,” 2015’s “Heaven Knows,” an emotional look into human emotion, and “West Texas Skyline,” A Tribute To Bobby Fuller, released in October 2013.

THE DOLLYROTS (Kelly Ogden) Interview - Punk Rock band

Jim and Mike Interview KELLY OGDEN from the Punk Band THE DOLLYROTS!
Jim has been a fan of the band since 2007 when they released their cover of "brand new key".
We had a lot of fun talking to Kelly about the new album (Down the Rabbit Hole), her acting debut on CSI, playing with Bowling for Soup, being signed to blackheart records, traveling with kids, Rabbits, Todd Rundgren on a train ... and more!
***********
ABOUT THE DOLLYROTS:
The Dollyrots are a Los Angeles, California based pop punk band made up of Kelly Ogden (vocals/bass) and Luis Cabezas (guitar/vocals). Since their formation 18 years ago the husband and wife duo has played over a thousand shows in the US and Europe, shared the stage with many of their idols, and released six studio albums along with several EPs, singles, splits, and a live concert film. Their last 3 albums have peaked in the Top 20 of the Billboard Heatseeker’s chart, earning heavy rotation on Sirius/XM radio and followed releases on Lookout Records & Joan Jett’s Blackheart Records.
What started as a hobby for New College of Florida students (and childhood friends) Kelly Ogden (bass/vocals) and Luis Cabezas (guitar) became a career when Ogden and Cabezas decided to make their band, The Dollyrots, a full-time gig in 2001. The duo set off on a road trip to find a new home for the group and settled in Los Angeles in 2002; once there, the pair set about honing a pop-punk sound inspired by the Ramones, the Pixies, the Sex Pistols, Nirvana, and Green Day. Two years later, the band signed with Lookout!/Panic Button Records and released Eat My Heart Out. Following release of their debut the band appeared onscreen on CSI:NY performing two songs off the album. While playing the Vans Warped Tour in 2006 the band members met Joan Jett, who was so taken by the Dollyrots that she offered them a spot on her Blackheart Records label roster after hearing demos of their upcoming LP.
The Dollyrots’ second album Because I’m Awesome debuted on Blackheart in 2007. The album spawned several singles that made an impact on radio and appeared on film/TV (Easy A, Brave, The Vampire Diaries, Greek, Reaper.) A year later they recorded a version of Jett’s song “Bad Reputation” for the soundtrack to the film Endless Bummer, followed up three years later with the slickly produced A Little Messed Up. The first single off this effort, “California Beach Boy”, was featured with a live performance by the band on The Price Is Right. The Dollyrots left Blackheart after that, releasing an EP on their own Arrested Youth label. For their next project, the group turned to crowd-funding site Kickstarter, launching a wildly successful campaign that yielded 2012’s The Dollyrots. Working again with co-producer John Fields, the independently released set featured Ogden and Cabezas firmly in charge for the first time in their career as they played all the instruments (save for a few parts done by producer Fields) and had final say over all facets of the process. By this point the Dollyrots had gone through a number of different drummers and generally operated as duo with guest musicians in the studio and on their various tours. Their 2014 release, Barefoot and Pregnant, was recorded during Ogden’s pregnancy and was subsequently followed by the birth of the couple’s first child. The album fared well critically and reached number seven on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart. The all-acoustic Love Songs, Werewolves, and Zombies was released digitally in 2013 to the band’s PledgeMusic supporters, and received a public release the following year.
The Dollyrots continued to successfully fund their projects via crowd-funding and in 2016, they released their first concert album, the ambitious, double-disc/DVD set Family Vacation: Live in Los Angeles. That same year also saw the release of the three-song EP Mama’s Gonna Knock You Out. The end of the year saw them working on two new projects, another kid and their next album. The couple’s baby girl was born in November and the John Fields-produced Whiplash Splash was released in early 2017. This was followed by a 7-inch single Get Radical, released on Little Steven Van Zandt’s Wicked Cool Records. The band most recently released their album of B-Sides, Rarities and Covers entitled "DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE"
