Dave Swift may not be a household name but he's shared the stage with legendary musicians such as Paul McCartney, Robert Plant, Cher, Joss Stone, Eric Clapton, Roger Daughtry, Paul Simon ... and those are just a few.
He's been a member of Jools Holland's Rhythm and Blues Orchestra since 1991 and also a with the house band on Later with Jools Holland (one of the top tv shows in the UK)
He's been called by Bass Guitar magazine as "one of UK's top bassists"
We had a great conversation with Dave and probably one of our longest interviews. We covered a lot of ground from Dave's early beginnings learning his first instrument (not the bass) to auditioning for Jools Holland and recently recording with Rod Stewart for his upcoming album. There's a lot in between and some great stories from Dave about some legendary musicians he's worked with. Like the time they needed a guitar player to fill in (for the house guitarist) when Smokey Robinson was set to do a live show... you won't beleive who they got to fill in.
We thank Dave for taking the time out of his busy schedule to talk to us. He's currently on tour and also in rehearsals for the tv show so he's got a lot going on. Dave was such a pleasure to talk to and you'll hear it in his voice how serious he is about what he does and the love for his art of making music.
At the end of the interview we did ask some "non-music" questions and when we got into food you would not believe it but we ended up talking about cheeses (like our last interview).. this may be a new thing .. or not ..
************
A little about Dave Swift:
Since joining Jools Holland and His Rhythm and Blues Orchestra in 1991, Dave Swift has established himself as one of the UK’s finest, high-profile bass players. In his career, which expands beyond three decades, Dave boasts a musician’s portfolio that seconds no other. Dave Swift has played for an array of renowned artists, from George Benson, Chaka Khan, Eric Clapton to Amy Winehouse, Adele and Paul Simon.
Over the years he has performed at many prestigious events, such as the North Sea Jazz Festival, Dubai International Jazz Festival, Blue Note Tokyo, Amnesty International, the Montreux Jazz Festival, Glastonbury Music Festival, and a G8 Conference for world leaders, which included former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, and President Bill Clinton. Additional performances include the Millennium Night celebration at the Millennium Dome for Her Majesty the Queen and a sell-out concert at the Sydney Opera House during their 2008 tour of Australia and New Zealand.
Dave Swift is currently on a UK tour with the Jools Holland Band throughout this month and December. Joss Stone will join them on some dates along with Rod Stewart (who will show up for some shows as a surprise guest)

- Does Jack Black like cheese?

This is the 1st (of 3) in our series of HALLOWEEN / HORROR podcasts for the month of October
Today we talk with SARA KARLOFF about her wonderful father and legendary actor BORIS KARLOFF who starred in over 160 films & tv shows.
We find out what Boris Karloff was really like!
We also talk about the chiller theatre convention (in NJ), the website (karloff.com) and we even ask Sara some music questions.
**************
ABOUT SARA:
Sara Karloff was born on her father’s 51st birthday, November 23, 1938. Boris Karloff was filming Son of Frankenstein at the time. Sara jokes that she was “his most expensive birthday present ever.”
Ms. Karloff is widowed, has 2 grown sons and 3 grandchildren. She has lived in Rancho Mirage, CA since 1981. In 1993, following the death of her step-mother, Evelyn Karloff, Sara assumed the responsibility for the persona and licensing rights relating to her famous father and formed Karloff Enterprises. The company’s goal is to maintain a standard of excellence and appropriateness when the name or likeness of her father is used. Through the licensing process she has been able to make merchandise and collectibles available to her father’s fans.
Sara met Ron Chaney (great-grandson of Lon Chaney Sr. and grandson of Lon Chaney Jr.) and Bela Lugosi Jr. (son of Bela Lugosi) for the first time in 1993 at a Famous Monsters of Filmland convention. As a result of that meeting a very special alliance was formed.
Although initiated by Ron Chaney, Ms. Karloff spear-headed a three-year effort to have their respective famous relatives immortalized in a series of commemorative United States Postage Stamps. Petitions were circulated all over the country, and with the help of the Screen Actors Guild, the media, innumerable genre magazines, and thousands of fans worldwide, more than 17,000 signatures were collected in support of this project. It was the legions of fans who made this effort a reality.
Sara continues to attend conventions around the world speaking about her iconic father and his remarkable legacy. Her favorite audiences are students whose questions reinforce her belief that these classic films are multi-generational in their appeal and their continued popularity is thanks to the wonderful fans!
Be sure to visit KARLOFF.com for some wonderful items and information on Boris Karloff.

KISS solo albums reviewed / New Music / Albums turning 50 years old 40 and 30
Saturday Sep 30, 2023
Saturday Sep 30, 2023
Today our main subject is all 4 of the KISS Solo Albums we review, rank and also read what someone (who obviously hates kiss) wrote in 1978 about the albums. Jeremy listened to these albums for the first time so it's great hearing what his first impression was. Rob is much older so he bought these when they came out on September 18, 1978 (oh my)
Before we go into the kiss albums we talk about:
1) Albums turning 50 / 40 and 30 years old in October
2) New Releases / New Music including a new favorite band of Rob's Tele Novella! They have a new album coming out on October 6th called "POET'S TOOTH". We play a sampling of their single, "Broomhorse"
3) What's Rob's Beef (new segment) - something that annoys Rob with the Billboard Top 10 (what doesn't?)
This is what we feel a solid show.
Thank you for listening!

Today I talk to Philip and Truett from the Austin, Texas band BRISCOE. We talk about their recent show where they got to open for The Dave Matthews Band, the making of the new album WEST OF IT ALL, a couple of the songs off the new album and more!
ABOUT BRISCOE:
Briscoe is Truett Heintzelman and Philip Lupton. To record West of It All, the duo was joined by producer Brad Cook on bass, drummer Matt McCaughan (Bon Iver), and multi-instrumentalist Phil Cook (Megafaun, Hiss Golden Messenger). Signed by ATO Records while undergrads, the Texan duo wrote West of It All as graduation loomed in the distance, funneling the stories of their college experience — from heartbreak to hard-won lessons to weekend trips into the rural countryside — into a raw, rugged blend of classic and contemporary influences. The result is a collection of 10 songs with folksy hooks and bold songwriting that bridges the gap between classic American roots music and its modern-day incarnation.
Formed at University of Texas at Austin, Briscoe quickly went from college gigs to selling out Antone’s and the Continental Club Gallery. As Briscoe continued to perform and grow their fanbase, a wider audience began to take notice. They soon opened shows for Noah Kahan and Ruston Kelly and were selected for dates with Zach Bryan and Caamp. After recently graduating from UT, Briscoe has had a packed touring summer filled with festivals alongside some of music’s biggest names — Bonnaroo, Winnetka Music Festival, FairWell Festival, Catbird Music Festival, and Iron Blossom Music Festival are a few. The band is currently headlining a tour this fall to support West of It All.
You can order the new album and Briscoe Merchandise at : www.briscoetheband.com

Today we talk to Paul Wexler about his Legendary Father: Jerry Wexler, Paul's work with Van Morrison and the Go Gos, his association with Stone Temple Pilots, we talk about Led Zeppelin (a band his father helped discover) and of course Paul's own band WexWax and their debut album "Swept Away"!
Rob met Paul many years ago when he walked into his print shop in Clinton, New Jersey (to get sheet music copied) .. they've recently re-connected through facebook. It was such a pleasure to talk to Paul again and hearing how passionate he is about songwriting and playing music.
ABOUT PAUL:
Paul Wexler has spent much of his adult life producing music. Paul has produced and worked in the studio with such artists as The Grateful Dead, Van Morrison, James Brown, The B52s, Grace Jones, The GoGos, Tin Huey, The Fleshtones, The Weirdos, The Mutants and others.
The son of legendary producer/A&R/Record Man Jerry Wexler, Paul’s early immersion in the roots and branches of R&B, Country, Jazz and Rock’n’Roll was a gift from his father that keeps giving and is reflected in Wexwax’s diverse sound.
For the past 8 years, Wexwax has been performing in NYC. Although Paul is now living in the Bay Area, he frequently returns to NYC to gig.
After years of honing their sound, Wexwax has now recorded Swept Away, their debut album. Recorded at 25th Street Studios in Oakland with master engineer Gabriel Shepard helming the board (Taj Mahal, The Kronos Quartet) Swept Away is an ambitious work that fully embraces the band’s multifaceted live shows.

COPYRIGHT CLAIM: The songs "Trembling", "We're Going for a Ride", "She Doesn't Love Him" and "Voices From the Harbor" used with permission from Paul Wexler.
